“You don’t like these?” she said.

“I’d rather dig a potato out of the ground and eat it raw.” She laughed. “No, you wouldn’t.” She took a bite of her

hamburger and chewed so slowly I thought it might take her the rest of the hour just to finish her food. “I wish I could pull a man out of the ground and take him home tonight.”

I squinted, confused. “What do you mean?”

She took a noticeable deep breath and looked away from me for a moment. Something seemed to catch her eye. But she didn’t say what it was. She turned back to me. “I broke up with Ronan.”

“What? Really?”

“Yeah. It was a while coming. He was holding me back from everything I want to do.”

“Like what?”

“I pulled out of the school play last semester, for starters, so I could spend more time with him. He’s needy, he’s like a girl. In the last couple weeks I was worried he might ask me to marry him or something. I couldn’t have that. I have to put my career first.”

“Oh yeah?” I said. “You get an agent?” Naoki was a Communications major, but she claimed what she really wanted to do was be an actress. Her parents had persuaded her against the Theatre major so that she could keep her options open. But she had scored a manager a few months ago and had appeared in a few print ads and online commercials.

“Not yet,” she said. “But soon. We’re just freshmen, Sean. We have time.”

“I know.”

“But there’s no time like the present to start training. I’m not gonna get any jobs if I don’t study acting, if I don’t participate in some plays, particularly the ones performed here at Pauer Bautam.”

“What was the main play performed last year?”

“La Cage Aux Folles.”

“Ahh. That’s a musical, right?”

“Yes. I’d prefer a more character-driven play, without songs. I’ve never been much of a singer.”

I laughed. “You’re definitely right about that.”

“Shut up.”

I took a bite of my turkey sandwich. It too was a little soggy. “So what are they doing this spring?”

“Well I was hoping for something, like, sexually charged, like The GraduateorSpring Awakening.”

“Would you play Mrs. Robinson if they performed The Graduate?”

I laughed, and this time she slugged me. “No, jerk. I’d play Mrs. Robinson’s daughter.”

I nodded. “Sure you would.”

“No, this spring they’re doing a Tennessee Williams play. You’ve probably heard of it.”

“All I know about him is that he was gay, right?”

“As a matter of fact, he was.” She finally took another bite of her burger. It was probably ice cold by now. “He’s written a few of the most famous plays of all time. You’ve probably heard ofA Streetcar Named Desire.”

“Of course,” I said. “I may not be a theatre major but I’m not stupid.” I leaned forward, bringing my mouth all the way up to Naoki’s ear, when I shouted, “STELLA! STELLA!”

Naoki almost fell out of her chair. This time she slapped me in the face, playfully so. I started laughing uncontrollably as I sat back down in my chair.
